この章では、FDE(forward-deployed engineer)が担う三つ目の仕事を見ます。
In this chapter, we examine the third responsibility of a forward-deployed engineer (FDE). An FDE is a role that goes deeply into a customer's organization, understands its real work, and advances technical changes. In the speaker's explanation, after understanding the work and redesigning the workflow around AI, the next step is to deploy agents into the customer's existing systems.
The third responsibility is deployment in the existing environment
Here, a system of record means an established enterprise system that a company continues to use for daily work and that holds its operational records. The important point in this chapter is not simply to prepare a new agent. The agent must work together with the system that already supports the customer's work.
The speaker names the following systems as examples of those used by enterprises.
- NetSuite(企業で使われるシステムの例)
- Dynamics
- SAP
- Salesforce
- NetSuite (an example of a system used by enterprises)
- Dynamics
- SAP
- Salesforce
Companies use these systems not simply because they can choose a different product immediately. They have a long history of implementation and operation, and their data and ways of working are connected to them. Migration costs, sunk costs from earlier investment, and resistance to large organizational change all matter.
To show this constraint, the speaker introduces a customer's statement. The customer says that the company has used NetSuite for five years and that moving to another system would cost $5 million. This is a quote about that customer. It does not mean that enterprise migration generally costs this amount or that companies always consider migration after five years.
“Put on top” means adding a layer instead of replacing the system
For this reason, the speaker does not propose abandoning NetSuite or Salesforce and moving to a new system. The proposal is to build agents on top of the existing systems and make them work within the environment the company already uses. This is integration with the existing system of record and an added layer of functionality, not a migration.
Example: Add an agent while keeping Salesforce
Suppose a customer's sales records are in Salesforce. The company does not need to replace Salesforce with another product from the beginning in order to deploy an agent. The idea is to add an agent that helps with sales work while taking the existing records and workflow as its starting point. This example is included to clarify the mechanism; it is not a description by the speaker of a specific Salesforce deployment method.
This difference is important. Even a sophisticated standalone AI product is difficult to bring into a company's real work if it is disconnected from the customer's work and records. By contrast, an agent connected to the existing system can follow the workflows and dependencies identified in the previous chapter. In other words, deployment depends not only on AI capability but also on whether the agent can connect to the place where the customer already works.
The platform manages the agents
The speaker describes the platform for this purpose as Varick OS. According to the speaker's claim, this platform provides the foundation for deploying agents in a customer's environment. The responsibilities named are the following four.
- Spinning up agents
- Monitoring agent behavior
- Managing rules for use and operation (governance)
- Checking whether agents work as expected (evaluation)
The speaker does not explain what data monitoring observes, what controls governance applies, or what metrics evaluation uses. Therefore, readers should not imagine Varick OS in detail as a product with a specific architecture or specific safety mechanisms. The supported claim is limited to the goal of providing a platform for spinning up, monitoring, governing, and evaluating agents.
This platform idea connects to the FDE's first two responsibilities. First, the FDE investigates the real workflow in a customer's department, including people, decisions, handoffs, and exceptions. Next, the FDE redesigns each step around AI instead of adding AI to a broken flow. The agent is then placed on top of the system of record that the customer actually uses. If the agent is built away from the real work, the results of the initial discovery and redesign are harder to carry into deployment.
The speaker concludes that enterprises need AI the most. This is not a quantified finding about the whole market. It is the speaker's view that large enterprises have long migration histories and complex operations, so they cannot move their existing environments easily and therefore have much to gain from AI that works within those environments.
The transcript is inconsistent in its spelling of the company and platform names. The passage saying that enterprises are too large to “move up” is also incomplete. In this chapter, the name Varick OS, the deployment explanation, and the figures of $5 million and five years are treated as the speaker's explanation and a customer's quote, as indicated in the plan.
The causal chain in this chapter is clear. Enterprise work is tied to existing systems of record and to the records and habits built on top of them. Therefore, scaling agents requires making them work on top of that environment rather than migrating everything. The speaker's proposal is for FDEs to understand and redesign the work, while a platform supports agent deployment, monitoring, governance, and evaluation.
