Key point of this chapter
そのために、まずFDE(Forward-Deployed Engineer)とストラテジストが企業の中に入り、仕事の流れを内側から調べます。
The speaker concludes that it is important not only to wait for AI models to improve, but also to understand how companies work before that. To do this, FDEs (Forward-Deployed Engineers) and strategists first enter a company and examine how its work operates from the inside. This is called an "inside-out audit." They then implement agents on a platform that fits what they learned.
Move ahead of AI progress by understanding operations
話者は「パックの先に出る(get ahead of the puck)」という比喩を使います。
The speaker uses the metaphor "get ahead of the puck." In this context, it means learning in advance how a company actually operates while AI capabilities keep changing. It does not mean simply choosing the newest model. It means understanding which departments make which decisions, which tasks depend on other tasks, and where human judgment is needed.
Begin with an inside-out audit
The audit in this talk does not refer to a formal accounting-audit method. In the speaker's explanation, it is the first stage in which FDEs and strategists enter a customer company and learn how that company works. As in the process mapping discussed earlier, they seek to understand the work in practice, decisions, handoffs, and exceptions. However, the speaker does not describe fixed deliverables or a formal procedure for this audit.
A product alone cannot solve every company's specific problem
The speaker says that selling only a product has limits when the work is tailored to a particular enterprise. Installing a prebuilt agent will not transform every company's operations in the same way. Each company has different people, approval sequences, exceptions, and connections to existing systems.
Example: From audit to implementation
Suppose we want to improve invoice processing in one department. Instead of installing an "invoice-reading agent" immediately, an FDE enters the workplace and investigates who checks invoices, under what conditions the work is handed to another person, and who decides when a problem occurs. The team then redesigns the steps to fit the company's actual flow. This is an example created to show the idea in the talk, not a formal case study of a particular customer.
Taken together, the talk has five stages
This chapter connects the earlier ideas as follows.
- Audit and mapping: FDEs and strategists examine the company's work and understand its real flows and dependencies.
- AI-centered redesign: Instead of attaching AI to a broken process, they decide which steps to automate and which steps should remain with people.
- Representing how the company functions: They represent work relationships and needed context as workflows or a dependency graph.
- Implementing on a platform: They place agents on top of existing systems of record and make monitoring, governance, and evaluation possible.
- Automation within a limited scope: In the future, small routine changes can receive autonomous assistance, while FDEs spend their time on customer conversations and understanding operations.
Human discovery and technical implementation are both necessary
The claim that "a product alone is not enough" does not mean that technology is unnecessary. The speaker also values the platform's automation features and the functions needed to operate agents. The combination is to have people investigate the company's context, turn that knowledge into a usable form, and then place the technology inside the operation. This is therefore not a choice between "people or AI." People discover and design; the platform and agents support repetitive work.
Automate small changes and protect FDE time
In the future described by the speaker, a client might email, "Please change the recipient of the quality-control report." An agent would check the company's context and update the workflow on the platform. This is not a plan to run an entire enterprise without people. It targets small, routine changes that do not require an FDE to respond every time. As a result, FDEs can focus on interviewing customers and understanding how work really happens. The speaker also explains that this final autonomous stage is still in development. No specific safeguards or evaluation methods are provided.
The bottleneck moves rather than disappearing
Even if an FDE agent reduces routine work, the FDE role itself does not become unnecessary. The problem in this talk is how to scale the work of entering each company deeply, understanding its operations, and redesigning them without continually adding people. Autonomous assistance can reduce small updates. However, understanding the customer is still important for deciding which operations to change and what should remain with people. In other words, reducing execution work and scaling the FDE motion are related, but they are not the same problem.
The closing claims and important cautions
The speaker strongly claims that the FDE motion itself is the biggest bottleneck today, and ends by inviting people to discuss hiring or becoming customers. He also presents the company as one of the fastest-growing startups and emphasizes its growth potential. These are positive promotional claims about hiring and sales made by the speaker. They are not facts confirmed by a neutral study. The company and product names are also not consistent in the original speech.
The proposal in this talk is not to sell an AI product first. First, investigate work from inside the company, design the operation around AI, represent the company's context, and then implement agents in the existing environment. Next, create FDE capacity through limited automation. For the speaker, getting ahead in the AI era does not mean looking only at models. It means understanding how companies actually work and connecting that understanding to technology.
